Introducing
our new line of breton shirt by Saint James; the Minquiers, named
after the island and rocks of Minquiers, part of the Bailiwick of
Jersey, and near to the coastline where Saint James breton shirts are
made. This breton shirt is a lightweight top in cream and navy with
long sleeves and a boat neck (rather than crew neck). It is soft to
the touch and well made from quality combed cotton.

Saint
James clothing was born in 1889 in the town of it's namesake, located
a few miles from the sea, and close to Mont Saint-Michel in Southern
Normandy. The Saint James story began when the Legallais family started
to spin and dye
the local wool and sell the skeins and wool balls to the shops of
Brittany and Normandy, later spinning the wool into shirts for the
fishermen. Leon Legallais, the then mayor or Saint-James transformed
this workshop into a large industry and in 1929 the company went
public.
HISTORY
The
striped breton shirt as we know it today came into being shortly
following the 27th March, 1858 Act of France which introduced the
navy and white striped knitted shirt as the uniform for all French
navy seaman. The official striped navy shirt or French sailor shirt
soon became more generally a working mariner garment as it was picked
up by many nautical men; seafairers and sailors across the region of
Northern France. It was said that when a sailor had fallen into the
sea, the distinctive block pattern of stripes on the French striped
shirt made him easier to spot amidst the many blurred colours of the
waves.
